What was it that you loved so much about the original Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (1971)? Was it the imaginative and sadistic tendencies of a child serial killer? Or was it the little orange men warping an array of colours to their requirements in whimsical musical numbers? If it was the latter, my friend, you are in luck!
Wonka is an epic, enjoyable, emotional pantomime. Seeping with heart, creativity and humour, Timotheé Chalamet helms the origin story of the infamous chocolate connoisseur with grace, humility and light feet. The supporting cast holds their own, with the likes of Olivia Coleman, Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Grant all providing camp/dynamic performances Andrew Lloyd Webber would be proud of. Grant’s particular dry humour and wit, transfer extremely well to a disgruntled and lonely Oompa Loompa, who, along with some zoo animals and exploding chocolate, showcase fabulous CGI that aids the tale in terms of wonder and amazement.
The use of practical sets and large ensembles create an immersive viewing experience that will leave the whole family giddy and yearning for more Timotheé, more Wonka and most importantly more CHOCOLATE!
