The Marvels is a fun, care-free, girl power adventure movie done right!
Awkwardness and forced agendas have plagued parts of MCU since the beginning of Phase 4, The Marvels however, simply leans into the wacky nature of all comic books, applying a well done, all be it simple, interconnected plot, spanning multiple movies, tv shows and comics books.
In this explosion of expression, colour and inclusivity, Director Nia DaCosta facilitates a fantastical, marvellous and entertaining relationship between our 3 titular characters, Captain Marvel, Ms.Marvel and Monica Rambeau, each character bringing something different to the fray.
Unique in their visualisation and characterisation, Iman Vellani’s (Kamala Khan a.k.a Ms.Marvel) charisma and enthusiasm are infectious and provide a great audience surrogate, as she holds her own amongst heavy hitters of the established Marvel Universe. Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) feels more assured and confident in her abilities since we last saw her at the end of WandaVision (2021), yet, she can still be seen struggling with the emotional turmoil caused by losing her mother to cancer during ‘The Blip’. An emotional connection she shares with her aloof Auntie Carol (Brie Larson a.k.a Captain Marvel). Brie Larson provides a colourfully stoic performance that left me craving more, with her title as a hero under threat, will this Maverick finally be able to be part of team to protect the universe at large?
The concept of the movie is strong, as we see, Carol, Monica and Kamala, 3 heroes with light based powers, continually switch places with one another in not quite a Freaky Friday situation but with all the same hijinks. Creating some really well worked, dynamic fight scenes that show off each characters power set in a spectrum of awesomeness. Do you remember Fox’s Fantastic Four : Rise of the Silver Surfer? It’s like that, but 100x better.
The Marvels provides a classic MCU feel in a modern world, with real stakes, a sprinkle of humour and a few cameos, some more important than others…WATCH THE END CREDITS SCENE! We even get some major confirmations, regarding character origins, introductions and the future of the MCU as a whole. If you are expecting Captain America : Winter Soldier or even a Guardians of the Galaxy, then you are setting yourself up for failure, unnecessarily I might add. Each comic on the shelf is vastly different, each character providing an escape to a different aspect of the crazy world outside our window. Be open minded and embrace the silliness.
Higher, Further, Faster baby…
